Architectural solar shading beautify landmark Roelevard

Clean lines for an international design

The Roelevard project in Roeselare, a realisation by the world-renowned Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta in collaboration with B2Ai, owes its striking architectural appearance in part to DucoSun Cubic sun blinds. These fixed, rectangular slats form an essential part of the façade and give the building its distinctive, clean look.

“The DucoSun Cubic louvres were crucial in realising our architectural vision,’ says Pieterjan Deruytter of property developer Steenoven. ‘We were looking for a façade element that would define the building both functionally and aesthetically. The rectangular shape of the louvres creates exactly that contemporary, modern effect we had in mind."

Perfect integration into the facade

The DucoSun Cubic louvres are fixed in the supporting structure of the façade. The rectangular shape of the louvres creates a particularly sleek effect that accentuates the lines of the building. The louvres thereby form one harmonious unit with the rest of the façade, resulting in a seamless integration.

"The biggest advantage of the DucoSun Cubic system is that it completely blends into the architecture,’ explains Deruytter. “The louvres are not merely a functional element, but an integral part of the design. They form one entity with the facade and reinforce the geometric lines of both the 46-metre-high Lux Tower and the Bronze Building."

Shading while preserving views

The strategic positioning of the DucoSun Cubic louvres provides optimal sun shading without obstructing the panoramic view from the terraces. This is especially important for the residents of the Lux tower, which overlooks the city of Roeselare.

Additional shading with DucoSun Cubic 300

In addition to fixed louvres, the DucoSun Cubic 300 with adjustable louvres was also chosen in the Roelevard project as a supplementary shading system. This intermediate solution not only offers the same sleek, rectangular aesthetic as the fixed variant, but adds additional flexibility thanks to the electrically adjustable position of the slats. When closed, they form one plane with the façade, optically blending into the whole.

At the same time, occupants and users can open or close the louvres depending on sunlight, providing optimum comfort and maximum control over light and privacy. This combination of dimensional stability and dynamism reinforces Roelevard's architectural strength and underlines the innovative approach to solar shading within the project.

Sustainable Performance

In line with the sustainable philosophy of the entire project - which, among other things, is connected to MIROM's CO2-neutral heat grid - the DucoSun Cubic solar shading system contributes to the building's energy performance. By controlling solar gain, it reduces the need for artificial cooling and improves overall energy efficiency.

"Sustainability is central to the Roelevard project,’ emphasises Deruytter. “The DucoSun Cubic louvres fit this objective perfectly by providing passive climate control. They reduce the heat load in summer, significantly improving the indoor climate while saving energy."

Strengthening green character

Roelevard is characterised by its nine green roofs covering a total of 3,800 m². DucoSun Cubic solar shading complements this green strategy by reducing the heat island effect often associated with urban developments.

The combination of DucoSun Cubic louvres and the green roofs enhances Roelevard's sustainable character. Together, they create a pleasant microclimate around the building, contributing to the liveability of this central spot in the city.

A recognisable architectural statement

Since its completion, Roelevard has developed into a recognisable beacon in Roeselare city centre. DucoSun Cubic louvres have contributed significantly to this identity by giving the building a distinctive look.

"The DucoSun Cubic louvres have become an important part of Roelevard's architectural signature,’ concludes Deruytter. ‘They give the building a contemporary, recognisable look that appeals to potential buyers. With around 70% of the flats already sold, we can say that this architectural choice has also proved commercially successful."

The successful integration of DucoSun Cubic louvres in the Roelevard project demonstrates how well thought-out shading is not only functional, but can also make an essential contribution to the architectural expression of a building. The result is a landmark that will define Roeselare's skyline for generations to come.

Le résultat est un point de repère qui définira la ligne d'horizon de Roulers pour les générations à venir.
